THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Anointment of the Sick

"Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the priests of the Church, and they are to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord..." (James 5:14)

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing and consolation for those who are seriously ill, preparing for major surgery, or experiencing the effects of old age. As the Catechism teaches, it is not only for the dying, but for any baptized person facing serious health conditions.

When to receive it?

  • At the onset of a serious illness or advanced age

  • Before major surgery

  • When a condition worsens

  • It may be received more than once, if needed

What are its effects?

  • Spiritual strength, peace, and hope in suffering

  • Deeper union with Christ’s Passion

  • Forgiveness of sins if unable to confess

  • Sometimes, physical healing

  • Preparation for eternal life, if death approaches

As Pope Benedict XVI said: “Through this sacrament, the Church supports the sick in their struggle and entrusts them to the crucified and risen Lord.”

If you or a loved one may need this sacrament, please fill the form below or call the Parish Office.
